Let the journey begin
Day 1
Greenville, SC to Montgomery, AL
All packed up and excited, we headed out early in the morning on the first day of our journey. This first day we travelled to Montgomery, Alabama, which is also the capital of Alabama. After setting up our campsite in an RV park outside the city, we packed up the dogs again and headed to the city.
Our first stop was at the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. https://museumandmemorial.eji.org/ This is a very impressive and moving memorial commemorating black victims of lynching in the United States. Since Whisky and Brandy weren’t allowed to enter, Gottfried went in on his own while we waited in the adjacent garden. Seeing how touched he was, I decided not to go in by myself this time.
From there we headed to the capital buildings. Driving through the city it becomes painfully apparent that there are serious inequalities. The streets we drove through were heavily patrolled by police and many of the houses were either empty or in shambles. The capital buildings themselves are very well kept and impressive. We wandered around the neighboring buildings until Whisky found a chicken bone in the bushes that I had to snatch from her before she ate it. After some hand-washing in a nearby fountain, it was time to move on.
The next stop we made was at the Riverfront Park. https://www.funinmontgomery.com/facilities/recreation-sports-culture/riverfront-facilities Unfortunately, the park was closed. Oh well. We walked through the restaurant row that is nearby. also here, most of them were closed and it was very quiet. I can imagine that it is very nice there on summer evenings!
Since there wasn’t much for us to do at the Riverfront Park, we starting heading back to our campsite and made one last stop at the cemetery to pay tribute to Hank Williams. The cemetery is absolutely huge and very old. It looks like the perfect scene for a scary movie - there is a lot of Spanish moss hanging from old trees which are surrounded by tombstones.
After all these discoveries it was time to make some dinner and enjoy a bottle of wine.
