Day 4
Stephen F. Austin State Park, TX to Pecan Valley, TX
After morning coffee with a breakfast of scrambled eggs and bacon, we headed from the Stephen F. Austin State Park to Pecan Valley. The scenery wasn’t as green as it had been until now. It sure looked a lot different now! Also, a very long stretch that we travelled was under construction which made the drive a little uncomfortable. Nevertheless, there was plenty to see!
As we got closer to Houston, the traffic got heavier. We aren’t big fans of the city, so we were glad when we were out of there again. One of the craziest things we saw was a truck pulling what looked like a lawn care trailer with rails on the sides - loaded with show horses. When we needed to stop for gas at the edge of the city, we were astonished at the number of homeless people. It appeared as though several were living directly under the freeway bridge next to the traffic light. Although I grew up in Los Angeles where there always has been a large homeless community, I still find it shocking to see so many living in desolate conditions today.
We continued on our way and reached Pecan Valley in the afternoon. The small campsite we stayed at was amazing. The staff was so friendly and there are chickens and goats as well! We purchased some fresh eggs which were great! There is also a large pecan orchard on the property, and they offer various pecan products as well.
After setting up our site, it was time for a gin-tonic and some relaxation. As dusk began to fall, about 30 deer showed up in the middle of the campground. What a treat! Also, if you are interested in stargazing, this campground is very dark. There is only one light in the middle which we were told we could turn off if we wanted to look for stars. We can highly recommend staying here.
