Day 6
Carlsbad, NM to Tularosa, NM
We all woke up looking forward to day 6! We were eager to leave Carlsbad, NM behind us. Our next planned stop was Roswell, NM. You know - looking for aliens. However, before we got to Roswell, we stopped at the Bottomless Lakes State Park. The park isn’t far from Roswell and was very nice to explore. However, do take care if you have dogs with you since there are a lot of cacti to be found! After a small hike, we were ready to see what Roswell had to offer.
Roswell is where a UFO apparently crashed in 1947. While there are many reports to be found online, both from believers and non-believers, everyone needs to form their own opinion on what is real. I personally believe that it would be arrogant to believe that we are alone in the universe. Maybe one day an alien being will show up at our front door with a six-pack of beer ready to tell us all about their adventures. Who knows? Would be cool…..
Roswell wasn’t as exciting as we were hoping it would be. The town is old and the stores weren’t all that inviting. After a short walk, we were ready to hit the road again. On the way to our campground in Tularosa, NM, we passed through the Mescalero Reservation at an elevation of 6,600 ft. This was the highest we had travelled with our T@bolino so far and everything went well. As we reached the end of the pass, the basin opened up in front of us and we could see the White Sands missile testing site in the distance.
The campsite in Tularosa was far enough from the main road that it was real quiet. Our site was on the edge of the campground facing the east. It was a very dark place and we were able to do some stargazing. There were a bunch of coyotes around that night, as well as a ton of bunnies! The campground is very clean and the owners are real nice. We highly recommend this campground if you are in the area.
After Gotti made breakfast on the outdoor camp-stove, we were off again and on our way to Silver City, NM. When leaving Tularosa, we came across the “World’s Largest Pistachio”. That was funny! There is a very big pistachio grove which offers tours and has a really big gift shop.
